l-Qaeda Fights Back: Inside Pakistani Tribal Areas is a detailed analysis of the situation and the dealings of the Mujahideen and the militants who have established their bases in Pakistan’s tribal areas. The study is a joint effort of Mohammad Amir Rana of the Pak Institute for Peace Studies (PIPS) and Dr Rohan Gunaratna. The study puts into perspective the madressahs that had existed within Pakistan prior to 1980, which later established ‘their own jihad organisations and training camps,’ and the madressahs which were established in the latter years that indoctrinated and armed their students to fight what many believe was the US’s war against the USSR. To fight against the communists was, however, declared as jihad by several Pakistani religious scholars and countless Pakistanis joined the war so much so that a race of sorts ‘started among Afghan jihad organisations to win the support of Pakistani jihad volunteers.’
